A residential proxy routes your traffic through an IP address that belongs to a real internet service provider’s network, so it looks like a normal home visitor. Here is how that works and when it pays off.
A residential proxy uses an IP address assigned by an internet service provider (ISP) to a household or a similar network. To a website, requests from such an address look like those of an ordinary visitor from that country or city, rather than coming from a server in a data center.
Many websites classify traffic by the network it comes from. Data center ranges are well known and are often rate-limited or challenged when traffic is high. Residential and mobile ranges are shared by real people, so blocking them aggressively would also block customers. This is why residential proxies usually achieve higher success rates on strict targets.
With a rotating residential proxy the exit IP changes automatically, per request or on a timer. With a sticky session the same IP is kept for a set time, which is needed for logins and multi-step flows. See rotating proxies.
